PEF: History & Accomplishments

Founded in 2004, the Public Education Foundation of Charlottesville-Albemarle (formerly the Public Education Fund) is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning in our public schools. With a focus on programs that provide systemic impact and go beyond the scope of current public resources, PEF has supported or initiated projects such as “Odyssey: 2025 for Math and Science,” afterschool intervention programs for at-risk elementary school students, a high-school guidance and college advisory program, and a senior volunteer program.

Our Vision for the Future

Today we are evolving into a high-impact foundation, committed to building programs that will transform education in our community and provide a model for school systems across the nation.

The Foundation (PEF) is a unique collaboration between the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County School systems and will comprise four committee-advised funds:

  • A dedicated fund in support of initiatives for the City of Charlottesville
  • A dedicated fund in support of initiatives for the County of Albemarle
  • The Innovation Fund, supporting joint initiatives with system-wide impact, including the Innovation Institute
  • The Vision Fund that will support the the PEF mission and operations
